The overtone flute is the ancestor
of all flutes! Having no finger holes, the notes are made by altering
the pressure of the breath.
Therefore, all notes are from the natural overtone (harmonic)
series, rather than from the conventional musical scale.
THE OVERTONE (HARMONIC) SERIES:
In technical terms, "the overtone (harmonic) series"
is a combination of a fundamental tone (first partial)
together with overtones (harmonics/partials) which
are upper tones generated from the fundamental tone.
Overtones occur in a fixed sequence (remember that the human
ear will only hear some of them). This fixed sequence is known as
the overtone (harmonic) series. The first twelve
notes of the (theoretically infinite) overtone series are illustrated
below in relation to a fundamental tone of "C".
